id industrial design magazine poster mailer cryptography of typography poster composing room
Anything dealing with type was a labor of love. This was originally a pro bono job (publicity and networking always help) for a type seminar given by a major NYC typesetter, Royal Composing Room. Their type director, a great teacher and designer, was the late Martin Solomon. "Marty, I need a word for proofreader marks, the Something of Typography." It took him a half-second to come up with "Cryptography." We both taught typography at Parsons, mine, basic, his, advanced.
Part of a direct mail promotion for ID magazine. The idea was to show common everyday objects with their metric dimensions. The poster worked but metrics never caught on in the US.
