We designed a number of issues of the Soho Weekly News, working always at deadline, and have always loved working on newsprint. An unfulfilled career goal: redesigning a major newspaper (and newspapers will not die). Both the Soho News and Family Circle jobs are largely type. One has a retail dramatic style and the other is more restrained and classical. | | For Family Circle we designed several of their embedded special sections. The health spread, one month, was pure type to make what might otherwise be dull seem easy to read. For the "Assertive woman" we drew a blank, till a friendnot an industry pro, Annette Eisenbergsaid, "You mean a woman who's not a doormat?" Bingo! Thanks Annette. Illustrator Charles E. White III did a series of paintings ending with the doormat disappearing, revealing only the smiling woman. | |
