This may be offensive. One of the great all-time art directors, one of my longstanding heroes, is George Lois. I had lobbied Art Direction magazine to do a cover and one day they called and said George's cover had been declined (if I remember rightbeen a while). I found the Philip Johnson quote, sketched the sequence on a stained 6th Avenue Deli napkin, and illustrator Reynold Ruffins made it work, adding the blushhis idea. Thanks Reynold. | Years later, having been a board member of the New York Art Directors Club, I designed a complete annual, adding the idea of special awards for first-time winners. Then we also did the complete and very first One Show annual. Their award is a two-sided pencil and we did theme and variations thorughout. Letterer/designer Carmine Vecchio fine-tuned the script typeface. | |
